State of Mind Sport and Steve Prescott Foundation ambassador Jimmy Gittins first met Steve Prescott MBE on the ‘Walk Against Cancer’ in 2007 and a firm friendship was cemented. Steve Prescott and Jimmy Gittins shared the same philosophy that “What the mind believes, the body achieves!”
Both pushed their bodies physically and mentally to the limit, overcame adversity and the cards they were dealt. They tackled many challenges together, including a parachute jump, cycling across France, paddling a dragon boat down the Thames and their final challenge, ‘The Race to the Grand Final’ in 2012.

On the 25th September 2016, the Steve Prescott Foundation (SPF) will host the Tabern St Helens Triathlon. Last year’s inaugural triathlon was immensely successful; the foundation set up in his name had finally made the great man’s dream become a reality. The race will start at Eccleston Mere and will include an Olympic and Sprint triathlon distance.
Martin Blondel, general manager of the SPF, described the event as the hardest logistical challenge in the SPF’s history.
He said: “Steve and I had been working on the concept of a triathlon taking place in St Helens for over three years. Leading people within St Helens said it would not happen. It was Steve’s last wish that it would take place. We could have easily opted for an indoor swim but Steve wanted in true SPF style for the triathlon to be a full test and this certainly is! Last year we attracted over 300 participants, this year we are hoping that "triathletes" of all abilities will test themselves and be inspired by Steve's courage in our Million Pound Year"
The second part of the triathlon will tackle the famous “Shaley Brow” into Orrell and back down past the Lancashire Manor Hotel through Crawford Village then into Rainford High School, who will host the second transition area. The Olympic triathletes will head back out to Crank for another loop of the cycling course with the sprint triathletes setting out from the school onto a 5km course around Rainford. On completion of the 25 mile bike ride the Olympic triathletes will attempt the Rainford 10k course to finish the triathlon.

We chose the route to feasibly call at the 5 local rugby grounds starting at the DW, the closest ground to home and finishing at Langtree Park, in time for the Huddersfield match. This worked out well considering our support for Saints! We planned the route using Google Maps, with the walking route working out at a nice round number, 30 miles.’ The itinerary is:-
