Celebrates 150 St Helens Anniversary
Registration is still open for the GPW Recruitment St Helens 10k run 2018 which takes place on Sunday 4th March. The event is open for runners age 16 and over. We are encouraging runners to sign up as soon as possible to ensure their place in this year’s event. Entries close on 01/03/18 or when race capacity of 2500 is reached. Registration costs £25.
The 8th annual St Helens 10k starts and finishes at the Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens, WA9 3AL. The challenging course includes the demanding gradient of North Road on the way.
Registration for the event has already passed 1500 entries. Race sponsors GPW Recruitment have been working tirelessly to encourage people to sign up to the biggest mass participation event in St Helens. Last year’s capacity of 2200 was reached well ahead of the registration deadline. As a result the capacity for 2018 has been increased to 2500. The event is supported by the Sports Development team of St Helens Council.
Each participant will receive a goody bag, an event t shirt and a specially designed medal which acknowledges the 150 Year St Helens celebrations.
Novice runners often target the GPW St Helens 10k as a goal to enhance their personal fitness. Team entries and corporate entries are welcome. Many runners are inspired by Steve Prescott and his mantra “What the mind believes the body achieves”. It is hoped that runners will not only enter the event but join #Team Precky and raise funds and awareness of the Steve Prescott Foundation. Each member of #Team Precky will receive a special commemorative t shirt to wear on the day.
Event organiser Martin Blondel, General Manager of the Steve Prescott Foundation says, ‘The GPW Recruitment St Helens 10k is our flagship event and one we are incredibly proud of. The uptake already has been terrific. We have increased capacity for 2018 due to the popularity of what is now a regular event on the St Helens calendar. We are elated the 10k will be the main focal point of people in the 150 year anniversary of the incorporation of St Helens borough. The GPW Recruitment 10k is a chance for everyone to improve their health and well being, which is exactly what our inspiration Steve Prescott wanted.’
‘Every year we are indebted to the wonderful volunteers who help ensure the success of the event. Roles include marshals at the stadium and for the route, packing the goody bags, manning the water stations along the route and supervising the bag drop at the stadium. Supporters and volunteers play a huge role encouraging the runners along the route, especially at the more difficult parts of the course.’
Councillor Gill Neal, St Helens Council Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “We are delighted that the St Helens 10K is part of our events programme for the 150th anniversary of the borough. 2018 won’t only be about recognising the legacy of St Helens’ impressive past, but is very much about celebrating our innovation, ingenuity and culture. The run supports the ambition of raising ambitions and aspirations whilst also supporting the health and wellbeing of our people.” Further details on the #StHelens150 programme can be found at www.sthelens150.co.uk .
TDL Event Services will again provide registration support and timing of the event. The progress of runners can be tracked on the TDL app which also provides final times for all runners. There will be interval trackers at 2k, 5k, 8k and 10k distance so it is possible to track each registered participant.
